Things To Know Before Owning a Bull terrier
1. Require a Ton of Attention-
They need a lot of attention. You constantly need to train them, give them a job, have them do something, have them do tricks, have them come with you, teach them tricks or commands or obedience or something. Remember, they need a job!
2. Grooming-
They’re really super easy to groom, so that’s a no-brainer. Just brushing them 1 or 2 times a week is more than sufficient. Bathe them every couple of months. So, in short, you brush them, do the teeth, do their nails, and they’re pretty much done.
3. Stubborn-
They’re incredibly stubborn. You almost have to outsmart them. You always have to be thinking ahead of what they’re going to do next, or if they’re stubborn about something, how you can get them to do it.
It’s almost like they have to have the idea that they figured it out, and you need to give them that idea like it’s their idea.
4. High Prey Drive-
They sometimes have a high prey drive. So when you take them outside for a walk their hunting instinct may kick in they try to chase down small animals like a squirrel and will never come back just to get that squirrel.Â
There’s not much you can do about the high prey drive other than don’t let them run off your property. You can go barn hunting. Barn hunting is a lot of fun for a lot of dogs with a high prey drive.
They get to run around a lot of hay bales looking for a rat and a tube, so you can get titles over that.
5. Special breed-
They are a special breed that isn’t for everyone. If you’ve never owned a dog before, I’d say find an easier breed to start with. As I said, they’re incredibly stubborn. And if you’ve never had one before, you don’t know what you’re getting yourself into.
These guys make great family dogs. They’re great with kids, they’re great with everybody. Just give them a job and don’t let them walk all over you. They’re pretty special, and it takes an incredible person to be able to own one of these dogs.
