About Rhodesian Ridgeback Dog
History and Origin-
the Rhodesian Ridgeback obviously originated in the country Rhodesia which today is the country of Zimbabwe in Southern Africa. The forebear of this breed was a dog kept by the Khoikhoi people who lived in a Cape peninsula.
These dogs were known to be very ugly but noted for their ferocity when acting as guard dogs. They were also very much hunting dogs. As a breed developed in Southern Africa, it became known as the lion dog as this dog was often used to hunt lions. Now as a point of fact, these dogs did not engage lions in battles. They did not capture or catch lions.
They were simply track and bay lions until the human came and dispatched the lion. Today, the modern Rhodesian Ridgeback is known for being a versatile hunting dog, livestock dog and great family companion.
Appearance-
Rhodesian Ridgeback is a huge, athletic dog breed with a striking appearance. Their short, smooth fur, which is often a deep colour of brown, red, or wheat, is what makes them famous.Â
The “ridge,” or section of hair that grows along the spine in the opposite direction, is what distinguishes this breed. The breed has a royal and commanding aspect due to this ridge, its muscular frame, and its strong legs. Their warm, expressive eyes are a deep brown colour that goes well with their fur.
Personality-
These dogs are extremely loyal and have unshakable confidence. And there is no doubt that they are fearless as in the past they were used to keeping the lions at bay.
They are very intelligent and independent-thinking dogs that can become great watchdogs. Although can be cautious of strangers, they are not usually aggressive.Â
Despite their strength and athleticism, Rhodesian Ridgebacks are known for being gentle, affectionate, and even-tempered with their families.
This breed can get along with kids but yeah, kids have to well behave towards them as well Dogs should be also socialized properly. These dogs are playful and love to be with you.
Life span and Size-
The average Life span of a Rhodesian Ridgeback dog can range from 10 to 12 years but some Rhodesians have been recorded to live up to 16 years.
An Adult Rhodesian Ridgeback’s height can range between 24 to 29 inches and weight can range from 79 lbs or 36 kg up to 106 lbs or 48 kg.
Trainability-
They’re not a dog to be forced to do something. They are bred to be independent thinkers.
If you think about a dog that was bred to chase lions, they have to be smart enough to think on their own. And that’s why it can be quite a challenge to train them.Â
However, they learn things quickly you just have to be firm(not mean to be scolding or shouting at your dog.) and very consistent while training.
Dog Aggression-
In regards to dog aggression, the breed was bred to work in packs, so should get along with other dogs.
But as I always say, be aware of same-sex aggression when dogs go into heat or when dogs of the same sex fixate on something that they want to dominate.
This could cause an issue within your home.
Health-
The Rhodesian Ridgeback does not suffer from any serious health conditions. However, it can be prone to minor issues such as elbow and hip dysplasia.
Hypothyroidism, deafness and dermoid sinus are also occasionally seen within the breed.
Tips To Take Care of Rhodesian Ridgeback
1. Feeding-
The first diet everyone should feed their dog is whatever they were eating the day you brought them home.
Transitioning to a new home is a lot for a puppy, so you don’t want to overwhelm them by also suddenly changing their diet. Sticking to a familiar feeding routine will help keep your pup feeling comfortable and at ease.Â
Also, early on, get in the habit of measuring food. The more consistent, the easier it will be to track your dog’s growth and health. It’s a personal preference, but IÂ recommend using slow feeder bowls.Â
They’re an easy way to slow down speed eaters and can help reduce the risk of bloat. They simply love to eat and will never get tired of it. So, what’s really important is you have the discipline to feed a consistent diet and the flexibility to adjust it as needed to best suit your dog’s individual health.Â
And Make sure to consult a vet bout which dog food or diet will be best for your Rhodesian Ridgeback/
2. Grooming-
In regards to grooming the Rhodesian Ridgebacks. This breed is very low maintenance. They need to be brushed once per week with the rubber brush and then wiped down with the damn cloth.Â
If you do this faithfully, you probably only need to bathe your Rhodesian Ridgeback once or twice per year.
3. Exercise-
Exercise is not only about giving them physical exercise because it’s highly intelligent dogs they need to have mental exercise as well.
For. e.g You can for walks twice a day but this sure consists of a controlled Peck walk then some training then they can play as a reward and then they shall relax.Â
So, if people don’t give them that stimulation then they start to just get a little bit rowdy around the house and create a mess because they need stimulation and if they don’t get it enough and are under-challenged then be prepared to get frustrated.
4. Socialization-
Like most large and powerful breeds, the Rhodesian Ridgeback will need socialization.
This means socializing with people, young and old, in and outside of the home, and with as many different variations in terms of social settings as possible.
So, by socialising they will be comfortable in each and every situation and will not be wary of strangers. Â
